I was in Milano for business and the fresh memory from having driven by Finale Ligure with my family the month before but not being able to ride, had me coming back to settle the score. I wrapped up my meetings in Milano and headed down to mountain bikers heaven, Finale Ligure, where the Enduro World Series 2017 was just held two weeks before. I was excited. I was going to ride on the same trails as the super stars. Or at least, eat the same dust.

MTB Beds

The MTB Beds villa 1 in Finale. One minute from the beach.

I hooked up with MTB BEDS, a cool gang from the UK, who runs an awesome MTB villa by the beach, in Finale as well as in Morizine, France, with in-house chef, bike mech and coaches. I only had one day to ride, but I was lucky to be able to join 10 happy riders from UK for a day of fun. When I arrived at the villa, my bike was already set up for me and I joined the other riders for dinner & beers before hitting the sack.

After a hearty breakfast in the villa, we got ready to load our bikes on the uplift.

The old Nato base from which many trails starts.

After a long and wiggling uplift we had finally reached our destination. The famous old abandoned Nato base that is the starting point for many of Finales famous downhill trails.

Two drivers. Just to be on the safe side. Its a car after all.

After a couple of photo shots, we were ready to hit the trails. And man, where they dusty and slippery! Endless, steep, rocky, dusty trails full of switch-backs and surprises. After only 10 minutes we had our first casualty. One of the guys, hit a branch and was pretty roughed up but after some bandages he was back on the bike again. That’s how mountain bikers roll..

They trails where absolutely fantastic, but brutal. On top of that, I had a brand new bike that I’ve never been riding before. With 170mm suspension, my confidence on the gnarly trails grew and I started to fly over stuff like I’ve never done before. Yes, I did wash out at least once, got totally coved in dust, but I earned my wings.

The godly dusty trails of Finale.

Some of the wicked trails we rode:

Roller coaster, X-men Stage 3 EWS 2017, Crestino, Finale Ale Ale Marina Roller coaster, Fast XC Mini DH Trail, Casa De Mago DH, Toboga Canova, Fast track and many others.

Action!

After a great lunch in a little travelers refuge up in the mountains, we continued down the epic decent into Finale Ligure, gathered at the town square for a couple of well deserved beers. A perfect day just before I had to jump into my car and drive back to Milano.

Me totally exhausted before the final leg down.
